At Castilleja we know that students thrive when learning happens within and beyond classroom walls and when students actively witness engagement in the greater community by the adults in their lives. Our library is a key center of interdisciplinary learning on our campus, serving as the hub of a thriving community of readers, researchers, and creators. In collaboration with classroom faculty, the library team ensures students master vital skills of information access and evaluation, with particular emphasis on critical thinking about the nature of authority and accessing multiple perspectives. Members of the library team engage directly with students as advisors, mentors, and instructors. We intentionally foster equity and belonging in all of our work. 

 

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Associate Librarian is a full-time, 10-month position and reports to the Director of Library Services. They provide a welcoming and helpful presence at the library circulation desk, manage circulation and cataloging, and maintain the library management system (LMS). The Associate Librarian contributes to the development and maintenance of an excellent collection of materials, both physical and electronic, to support students in pursuing their academic and personal goals and interests. They contribute to classroom instruction under the leadership of the Instructional Librarian, supporting students and employees in conducting research. They serve as an advisor on a grade-level team and support other student-led enrichment clubs. They collaborate in support of activities and programs throughout the school year that promote student engagement in everything from our annual Edible Book Festival to a critical examination of intellectual freedom. The Associate Librarian also manages the library’s digital presence across several platforms. The Librarian coordinates and is assisted by a team of parent and student volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • As a part of the library team, contributes to tasks and projects related to all elements of the library program, including:
    • Establishing a positive, productive, engaging atmosphere in the library space
    • Ongoing collection development, materials processing, circulation,  and promotion of library materials and programs
    • Maintaining seamless access to the library’s virtual resources, including OPAC, ebooks, and databases via the school’s LMS
  • Coordinates a team of parent volunteers and student assistants
  • Supports both student and faculty research, furthering inquiry-based learning in one-on-one and small group meetings
  • Delivers research skills instruction in collaboration with classroom faculty and the Instructional Librarian
  • Serves as a grade-level advisor to a group of students; supports other student-led enrichment clubs
 

Key Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Library and Information Science or related field of study
  • Prior experience in a library setting and/or relevant instructional experience 
  • Proficiency with library and communications technology
  • Highly organized and flexible, with strong detail orientation 
  • Experience building positive rapport and supportive relationships with teens

  • Castilleja uses a competitive salary scale which takes into account the range of experience, education and skill level. The yearly salary for this position ranges from $82,700 to $125,000
